Omega Fire has been appointed by Capital & Centric to provide fire engineering support for the redevelopment of two of the largest surviving cotton mills in Manchester. The development is part of the Talbot Mill project and will also include a new build residential block. The redevelopment of the existing mills will provide residential accommodation over six (Mill 1) and seven floors (Mill 2), while the new build block will provide residential apartments over ten floors, creating over 200 new homes. The buildings are to be arranged around a feature central courtyard, positioned below the street level with access to the canal basin.
Given the existing nature of the mills as well as the positioning and location of the site, a number of fire engineered solutions were developed to ensure the highest safety standards are applied. These included computational fluid dynamics to validate the smoke control system proposed for common corridors; provision of sprinkler protection throughout the development to improve structural fire protection of the existing part of the scheme and developing a close relationship with Approval Authorities and Fire Service from the early stages of the design to provide adequate and efficient means to access the site.
We are very excited to be working on the restoration of these historic buildings which are a stunning example of Manchester’s industrial heritage.
